Why You Need It: The 20 Advanced-Level Bonus Articles 61-80 in Biographies: Short, Short Stories Based on “Messages of People’s Lives,” differ in format, organization, and purpose from Biographies 1-60 (each of which centers on one or a few individuals’ “life stories”).  Instead, each Article is built around a different field of endeavor and is filled with an impressive amount of “Name-Dropping”—defined here as “the studied but seemingly casual mention of prominent persons” associated significantly with the subject matter.  So instead of focusing on Main Ideas & Supporting Detail of specific Bios, you can use these unique Overviews to expand attention to historical trends, cultural norms, and major events or catalysts in which famous people played roles by acting, reacting, and interacting with the world.  

What You’ll / They’ll Do:

[1] Excerpted from an earlier section, page 14 is titled “20 Advanced-Level Biographical Articles 61-80 on text pages 83 to 126.”  It’s followed by page 82 on “Getting It Together with Biographical Articles.”  Read both pages for ideas for utilizing the material—including its sections on Vocabulary Building, The Context of Chronology or Categorization, the elicitation of Famous Names, and the opportunity to Tell Your Views.  Note that Article titles are Topics such as Actors & Acting, Business, Crime & Criminals, Dictators, Explorers & Discoverers, Famous Families, (Influential) Groups, Heroes, Inventors, Judges & Law, Lovers, Mothers, Naturalists, Real Vs. Imaginary Personalities, and the like. The culminating Biographical Article 80 on pages 121-122 is an attempt to entice readers (researchers / debaters) into a compilation of “The Most Significant Figures in Human History.” A four-page Answer Key ends the H-01.05 Download.      

[2] As with all (80) Selections in Biographies: Short, Short Stories Based on “Messages of People’s Lives,” when printed out with odd-numbered pages on their faces and corresponding even-numbered ones on their reverse sides (pages 83 & 84, 85 & 86, and so on), readers can choose to use “Interactive Activities” on their backs before, while, after—or even instead of—doing the readings.

[3] Clearly, the intent of Biographical Articles 61-80 is to serve as “jumping-off points” for the pursuit of further (extensive, comprehensive) teaching / learning of Biographies as part of the “Whole of Knowledge.”  They are less purposed as tools for improving “Reading Skills & Strategies” than as background resources for the exploration of broad content areas such as World History & associated (Social) Sciences.
